If you’re missing one or more teeth in Charlottesville, VA, dentures from Dr. Tommy Duong may be right for you. Take the first steps toward restoring your smile today.
What Are Dentures?
Dentures are false teeth that are used to restore your smile after tooth loss. We offer both partial and full dentures at Rivanna Dental Care. Partial dentures consist of one or more false teeth in a metal and plastic framework. This framework attaches to your remaining healthy teeth to hold your dentures in place and restore your smile.
If you've lost most of your teeth, though, your Charlottesville dentist may recommend full dentures. Full dentures consist of a full set of upper, lower, or both rows of teeth. These are placed in a gum-colored acrylic base that fits perfectly over your gums. To get full dentures, you will need to have all of your remaining teeth removed. This is why full dentures are only recommended if you have lost most of your teeth, or if most of your teeth are unhealthy and cannot be saved with alternative treatments.

The Denture Treatment Process
Initial denture fitting
After any necessary preparatory appointments like tooth extractions, you’ll come to Rivanna Dental Care for your denture fitting. Dr. Duong will take detailed images and impressions of your teeth, and use them to make a model of your bite. He will send this information to a dental lab where a set of wax test dentures will be made.
Denture try-ins
After a few weeks, your first set of test dentures will arrive at Rivanna Dental Care. You’ll come back to try them out and see how they feel, and Dr. Duong will make notes about the fit. Then, he’ll send this info to our partner dental lab, and they’ll make another set of test dentures. This process may be repeated multiple times until the fit is perfect.
Final denture placement
Once your test dentures fit perfectly, Dr. Duong will order your final set of partial or full dentures. Then, you’ll come back to our Charlottesville, VA office for your final denture placement. Dr. Duong will check the fit one last time, then send you home with instructions on how to care for your new teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are There Alternatives To Dentures?
Yes. Depending on the specifics of your case, you may have other options for replacing your missing teeth. Dental crowns and bridges are a great option for replacing a row of two or more missing teeth. Dental implants are also an option for replacing one tooth, several teeth, or even a full mouth of teeth. To learn more about these alternatives and find out which treatment is right for you, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Tommy Duong at Rivanna Dental Care.
What are dentures?
Dentures are custom-made replacements for missing teeth and can be taken out and put back into your mouth. They are available in two types - full and partial. Full dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Dentures not only improve your smile but also help maintain the structure of your mouth, making it easier for you to eat and speak.
Who is a good candidate for dentures in Charlottesville?
Dentures are suitable for individuals who have lost some or all of their teeth due to decay, gum disease, or injury. If you are missing teeth and it's affecting your confidence, speech, or ability to eat certain foods, then you are likely a good candidate for dentures. However, it's important to consult with a dental professional like Dr. Tommy Duong at Rivanna Dental Care to determine the best solution for your specific needs.
How long does it take to get used to new dentures?
Adjusting to new dentures can take some time as your mouth and muscles get accustomed to them. It's not uncommon to experience minor irritation or soreness initially, and the flow of saliva may increase. However, these problems diminish as your mouth adjusts. Usually, within a few weeks, most patients are comfortable wearing their new dentures.
How do I care for my dentures?
Denture care is crucial for both the longevity of your dentures and the health of your mouth. Here are some tips:
- Clean your dentures daily: Just like natural teeth, dentures can get plaque, stains, and bacteria. Clean them daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive denture cleaner, not regular toothpaste.
- Handle them carefully: Ensure you don't bend or damage your dentures while cleaning.
- Take out your dentures every night: This gives your gums a chance to rest and helps keep your mouth healthy.
- Store them safely: When not wearing your dentures, place them in a glass of water or denture cleaning solution to prevent them from drying out.
- Regular dental check-ups: Visit your dentist at Rivanna Dental Care regularly to ensure your dentures fit correctly and to check for signs of oral diseases.
Remember, dentures are a significant investment in your oral health and confidence. With proper care and regular dental check-ups, they can help you lead a healthier, happier life.
